Castle of Rotaio
In posizione dominante sul tracciato dell'antica via Francigena, tra le colline coltivate a vite e ulivo, Rotaio, gode di un fascino straordinario. La sua posizione privilegiata dovette attirare gli interessi di Lucca che, tra i secoli XII e XIII, era impegnata nelle guerre con Pisa per il controllo delle zone litoranee.
Proprio il comune lucchese commissionò, nel 1223, la costruzione del castello di Rotaio. La sua spessa cinta muraria a pianta triangolare ha un perimetro di circa 300 metri e un'altezza di 5. Sulla porta d'accesso si trova una torre di forma rettangolare che sporge all'esterno delle mura.
Historycal news
After definitely wiping out the feudal system in Versilia, Lucca began to fortify new areas and put the castles of the Versilian cattani back into shape. In this context Lucca began, in 1223, the construction of the new castle of Rotaio to stop the advance of Pisans. A watch tower was built at the foot of the mountain.
Between 1315 and 1324 the castle was held by Pisa and further fortified, until Castruccio Castracani, ruler of Lucca, took it back. After the death of Castruccio, however, the Pisans continued to assert their claims on the castle and obtained it again in 1342. Rotaio, together with Pietrasanta and its vicariate, returned under Lucca in 1369 when Emperor Charles IV freed them from Pisan sovereignty.
Roads
Between Capezzano Pianore and Pietrasanta turn off state road Sarzanese towards Rotaio. Alternatively take the A12 or the A11 Firenze-Mare motorway and exit at Viareggio.
By rail: Livorno-Genova line, get off in Viareggio.
