Pontaccio

Area: Garfagnana
District/Locality: Gallicano
Dating: 14th century

The "Pontaccio" (old and broken-down bridge) of Gallicano spans the stream Turrite Cava at the place named after the bridge itself. It is a footbridge with a single round arch and, as its name implies, has long been in a poor state of preservation. During the 2004 restoration, promoted by the Parco Regionale delle Alpi Apuane (Regional Park of Apuan Alps) in cooperation with the Municipality of Gallicano, the bearing structure consolidation was carried out together with the re-construction of the parapets and the restoration of stone surfaces. The arch span is 11m, and the keystone is placed 5 m above the stream level. The bridge was built by local masons with stones drawn out of the river bed in the 14th century.
How to reach

by car:From Lucca take the SS 12 in direction of Abetone. When in Borgo a Mozzano, follow the provincial road in direction of Castelnuovo Garfagnana. Take the road to Fabbriche di Vallico. The bridge is situated just after the artificial lake.
