Fortifications

In this section you can find information about Medieval, Renaissance and 18th century fortifications that are peculiar to Lucca's province, divided for this purpose into four areas: the Versilia coast, the central Plain, the Mediavalle and Garfagnana.
We aim to virtually reconstruct the original complexity of an entire defensive system in all its typological variety that bears witness to the ‘borderland' character of an area contended for centuries between Lucca, Pisa, Florence, Genova, and Duchy of Ferrara in its northernmost part. The selection presented here intends to reconstruct and recompose the unity of a scattered heritage of monuments taking into account not only architectural aspects, but also their function of fortresses which are closely connected to the historical events in the area.
