Bridges

This section is dedicated to the bridges of historical and architectonical importance sited in the Province of Lucca.
The bridges have a great symbolic value beside their function: for their "unnatural" charactrer (they put in touch two lands which were originally divided by the water) they often inspired stories and legends, as the famous one of the Devil's Bridge in Borgo a Mozzano.
Above all others bridges are peace constructions: indeed during World War II almost all the bridges of strategic importance in the valley floor were destroyed by the Germans in retreat.
Notwithstanding this, still nowadays in the Valley of the Serchio River, and in those of its tributary, a great number of bridges can be found, often built in the Middle Ages, which were used by the communities of the area , beside those more important sited on the main routes.
